cPCI / PXI / PXIe Overview
CompactPCI ratified as PICMG 2.0 in late 1995 is an interconnect bus standard for industrial computers, combining a 3U or 6U Eurocard-type card and PCI signaling / protocols via a passive backplane with metric connectors. PXI (PCI eXtensions for Instrumentation) is the application of CompactPCI for measurement and automation systems. PXI uses commercial PC-based PCI bus technology while combining rugged CompactPCI modular packaging with timing and synchronization features in order to provide an optimized basis for complex, rugged, modular instrumentation systems. The PXI standard is governed by the PXI systems Alliance (PXISA)
PXIe (PXI Express) serves as the evolutionary subset of the PXI standard by replacing the PXI’s parallel data bus with a high-speed serial interface. This evolution brings with it a smart serial communication interface, allowing for transfer of more data at a faster speed. Often PXIe systems are realized with hybrid backplanes allowing to use all, cPCI, PXI or PXIe peripheral cards in the same chassis.
W-IE-NE-R cPCI, PXI and PXIe chassis are designed to combine rugged mechanical construction with high-speed backplane technology and high performance power options. Different slot configurations in combination with different Power Supplies are available as standard.
