VITA 62 VPX Power Supplies
VPX, also known as VITA 46, is an ANSI standard defined by VITA (VME International Trade Association) that provides VMEbus-based systems with support for switched fabrics incorporating the new MultiGig RT2 high speed connectors. VPX continous the mechanical form factor of 6U and 3U Eurocard size and partially keeps the 32bit parallal VME bus. VPX was created to provide a more robust, high-speed performance for data-intensive, high bandwidth applications by using high speed serial switched fabric interconnects such as PCI Express, RapidIO, Infiniband and 10 Gigabit Ethernet with speeds of up to 10.3 Gbit/s.
In addition, VPX is designed to withstand greater mechanical and environmental stress making it the ideal solution for challenging military and aerospace applications. For these rugged military applications VPX is combined with REDI (Ruggedized Enhanced Design Implementation – VITA 48). VPX REDI is defining the mechanical specifications for ruggedization, ESD as well as forced air, conduction and liquid cooling.
VPX systems are typically built with an air or conduction cooled chassis which holds the VPX backplane and provides the mechanical support for the VPX plug-in modules. For VPX and Open VPX backplanes and chassis please see the Hartmann Electronic web site.
OpenVPX is the architecture framework that defines system level VPX interoperability for multi-vendor, multi-module, integrated system environments.
Power wise VPX is using the same DC voltages as VME64x, i.e. +5V, +3.3V as well as +/-12V however, 6U systems can also use in addition 48V. The VITA 62 standard defines the mechanical and electrical specifications for commercial-off the shelf plug-in power supply modules in 3U and 6U format.
