VPX336 / VPX340 Series

W-IE-NE-R VPX340 and VPX336 series are commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) conduction cooled, ruggedized, small-form-factor, power supplies according to the VITA 62.0 specification.

Product Use

W-IE-NE-R VPX340 and VPX336 can be used to power VPX / Open VPX chassis and will fit into the standard envelope defined by VITA 48.0 specifications.

Designed for military / aerospace applications. MIL-STD compliance tested.

High overall efficiency is achieved, using state of the art switching power technology. The VPX power supplies are outfitted with advanced features, such as reverse-input-polarity-protection, EMI filtering, full over / under voltage and surge protection, over current and over temperature protection, and operate within a wide input range voltage.

Functionality / Features

Multi-stage Input Filter

Outfitted with a multi-stage input filter, the VPX340 and 336 series meet the EMI requirements as specified within MIL-STD-461F (CE102, CS101, CS114, CS115, CS116). This filter protects the power supply in case of reverse polarity, over-voltage and input voltage spikes of up to 250V as per MIL-STD1275D.

Discrete Power Circuit, High Efficiency, Flexible Output Configuration

Using power circuits built with discrete components, these power supplies can easily be tailored to customer applications with different requirements. In particular, the power / current needs for individual voltages rails are specific to each VPX / OpenVPX system. Providing ample power while keeping efficiency high to balance the thermal output is crucial. On the VPX336 series, each individual main converter is designed for maximum current which allows different power supply configurations having either a stronger 12V, 5V or a more evenly distributed power supply over all 3 main outputs by still guaranteeing the highest efficiency of close to 90%.

28V Power System, Wide Input Range

Operates from nominal 28VDC aircraft or vehicle Prime power. The WIENER VPX340 and VPX336 offer an extended input voltage operating range of 15V to 40V. This allows these power supplies to perform during a “Cranking Surge” as per MIL-STD-1275D which would drop the input voltage to 16V for a duration of 30s. VPX336 can even ride through an “Initial Engagement Surge” as defined by MIL-STD-1275E, dropping the input voltage for a short moment down to 12V.

Testing

Tested MIL-STD Compliance

The VPX340 and VPX336 series are designed to be in compliance with MIL STD 461, 704 and 1275 as per VITA 62 ( see Rule 3.2.1-2). The following is a minimum list of EMC standards that a VITA 62 module vendor shall test to:

a. [MIL-STD-461F] Sections: CE102, CS101, CS114, CS115 and CS116
b. [MIL-STD-1275D]: Ripple, Surge and Spikes
c. [MIL-STD-704F]: Normal and Abnormal Transients and Distortion Spectrum
d. [MIL-STD-1399C]: Spike, Transient, Modulation and Harmonic Content

VPX340 has been successfully tested at an accredited 3rd party test lab (VPX336 test in preparation). Test reports are available upon request.

• MIL-STD-461F (EMI) Compliance: Designed & tested in compliance with sections CE102, CS101, CS114, CS115, CS116.
• MIL-STD-704 Compliance: Designed & tested in compliance for normal and abnormal transients and distortion spectrum. External hold-up circuit optional.
• MIL-STD-1275D Compliance: Designed & tested in compliance for ripple, surge, & spikes.

Software Capability

An embedded microprocessor with a health monitor provides monitoring and control via I2C bus using the SM0/SM1 connector pins as defined within VITA62. Additionally, a Micro-USB connection on the front can be used as an additional communication port. These interfaces allow for the monitoring of input voltage and current as well as the status, voltage and currents of all output rails. The USB connector also provides user programming capability for additional features such as power sequencing. For easy communication with a Windows PC, W-IE-NE-R provides control / monitoring GUI Software.

Size / Mechanical Compliance

The VPX power supply mechanical dimensions are 3U x 4HP (0.80” slot). They are outfitted with connectors, keying and alignment mechanisms as per VITA 62.

Environmental

The power supplies are designed to meet MIL-STD-810G and operate in a -40°C to +85°C temperature range (measured at wedge lock). They are manufactured with standard acrylic conformal coating to withstand sand, dust and salt atmospheres (other coating options available upon request).
